Just Who Does the BOE Serve ?
08/02/07 at 7:34am

For the first time in over fifty years, children from our neighborhoods will be the objects of ridicule and scorn every Friday night this fall.

I'm sure the BOE is under tremendous pressure as they ponder the fate of RP.
I think they should consider  that this pressure will redouble when HHS students start coming home after football games crying about the cruel names they have been called by the students from the opposing school.

I strongly suggest that  BOE members remember how nasty teenagers can be to their peers and consider the 'creative' signs  and banners (referring to RP Morality Issues) that will be a part of every game this fall.

RP has become a lightning rod for verbal abuse and humiliation that our children will suffer this fall.
Because of him - and him alone - what should be a wonderful experience for our children will become a season of shame.

If our BOE allows this to occur, whose interests are they serving?  Certainly not the children's.

Please attend the Hoover High School Football Jamboree on August 24th at the main campus and you will see otherwise.  What you allude to wasn't there during the past two seasons, except for a questionable run-through banner by Vestavia Hills HS at their stadium.  It also wasn't there at the Spring Game in Oxford and it wasn't there at the 7 on 7 last week.  Most people are rational and understand the politics being played in the media and that people like to spread rumors and gossip.

Unfortunately, the only trouble would most likely come from within our own community, if any, during a game.  As during past seasons, the Hoover Police continue to address those concerns and plans remain in place to handle any public disturbances at a high school event, inside or outside of the event venue. The HPD does a great job of patrolling and canvassing events for all of our schools and beefs up security in particular for our high school events.

If you can't make it to that game, here are the Hoover High School football schedules for the upcoming season.

Slc07, you are right about the big signs and remarks.  This could get creative.  I can hear the remarks now and they aren't pretty.

billybob555, There were a couple of incidents last year that led to fans being removed due to signs, language, and if I recall a T-shirt.  This type behavior or plans to disrupt are thwarted very swiftly at any Hoover school event.

Sure and the language police will be there to protect your child from ugly comments.

I know that, I saw her BOOBS on al.com. She doesn't think this effects RP's job performance.

Great Idea.  Had not thought of increasing our police presence (and, cost to Hoover Taxpayers) in order to reduce the embarrassment our kids will suffer because of RP's personal issues.

Road games may be problematic, should parents of the host team object to the Hoover Police's interference with their children's free speech . .    Perhaps this will be a responsibility best taken by the State Police.

While the Hoover BOE and HPD may be willing to incur any expense necessary to protect our kids from verbal abuse caused by RP . . .  We will be sorely disappointed if  we expect the same from other communities.

Yes, language, not only profanity, is also often reported.

There has been teenagers, young adults, and parents (isn't that a shame) removed from events, due to language, in just about every sport.  Ironically, it is often parents that aren’t even tied to the program than the kids from visiting schools who can't seem to behave.  There tends to be a lot of curious onlookers that visit to take in Hoover and even some Spain Park football games for certain match ups during the season.

I invite you to come watch a game at either of the Hoover high schools.  It seems to me that you have never been in attendance at one before.  I think you would enjoy seeing how well they're organized and policed while the student athlete’s, band’s, and cheerleader’s hard work entertains you and the rest of the fans and curious onlookers.

Police escorts and security is commonplace with just about all schools today, has been for years.  You can thank "certain parents" for that unfortunate trend.

BucsJags, lose your Thesaurus?

You keep referring to the way Hoover handles things.  I didn't look at the schedule, but surely Hoover plays on the road some, right?  How will HPD handle that?  Besides, signs aren't the only way that people can be ridiculed.  I HAVE been to games.  Heck, I used to PLAY in them (did you?).  What goes on in the stands and around the fields at many of these venues is simply not policeable.  If you think that there won't be harassment and ridicule directed at our kids, you're dreaming.

If foul language and profanity issues were enforced by the AHSAA - The Hoover BOE would not be dealing with RP issues.  He would be gone.

Bob Dylan lyric for your philosphical amusement:

You Gotta Serve Somebody

You may be an ambassador to England or France,
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance,
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world,
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You might be a rock 'n' roll addict prancing on the stage,
You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage,
You may be a business man or some high degree thief,
They may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk,
You may be the head of some big TV network,
You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame,
You may be living in another country under another name

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may be a construction worker working on a home,
You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome,
You might own guns and you might even own tanks,
You might be somebody's landlord, you might even own banks

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride,
You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side,
You may be workin' in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair,
You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir

But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.
