Alabama State Legislature wants to take funding away from Hoover City Schools

This post will have a short version and a long version.  Both deal with S302, which is currently in the Legislature and has a chance to come in front of the Alabama House and Senate for a vote.

Both the short and long version of the post have the same message:  It’s not good for Hoover City Schools.  Please contact your senators and ask them to vote no on S302.

Your senators can be reached at the following e-mail addresses:

That was the short version.  Now, here’s the long version.

Please take time to look over the Advocate letter from AASB and feel free to share with our stakeholders.

We must contact our senators Roberts and Waggoner and ask them to vote “No” on Senate Bill 302. The senate sponsor dropped this bill late Wednesday and had a public hearing the next morning before opposition had time to speak. It passed with a favorable vote Thursday morning and it could be up for a full vote in the Senate as early as Tuesday morning.

Supporters will tell you that Hoover City Schools “makes money” when students go to Public Charters. We do not make money. We are not fully funded. Mental health, transportation, OCE and many other areas are paid from the taxes you voted for to support public education in Hoover.

If we lose local funding (county and city) to Public Charters it will cause us to lose local units (teachers) and could cause increased numbers in the classrooms. The Public Charters already receive the state funds for their students. This bill would see that your county and Hoover local tax would go also. You voted to be taxed on public education in Hoover. If public charters feel the need for increased funding then they should go through the process for a referendum and a vote by the public

Please contact Senators Roberts and Waggoner and ask them to vote “no” on SB302.
