Voter Registration Drive

Friends, we have a City Council and Mayoral election coming up this summer.  Anecdotally, I hear from lots of folks who have not yet taken the time to register to vote.  Registering to vote is painfully simple.  You request a form via e-mail, the Secretary of State mails it to you, you complete it, and then mail it to the address indicated.

You can also download an application directly from your computer, print it out, and mail (or hand-deliver) it to your voter registration office.

Here's the link for downloading the application:  http://www.sos.alabama.gov/downloads/election/vr/nvra-2.pdf

Here's the office of Registrars for Jefferson County:
Jefferson County
716 R Arrington Jr Blvd N
Ste A-410
Birmingham AL 35203-0115
(205) 325-5550

Here's the office of Registrars for Shelby County:
Shelby County
PO Box 1642
Columbiana AL 35051-1642
(205) 669-3913

I don't need to tell you how important it is to have the best leaders for our City of Hoover.  With the upcoming economic challenges facing our families, and the continued growth of our school system, it is imperative that we have city leaders that understand the challenges facing us all.

Please take the time to register to vote if you haven't already.  Please send e-mails to your friends with the link posted above and ask them to take the time to register as well.

Technically, you have until 10 days prior to the election to register.  But we all know what happens when we wait till the last minute.  So please take the time to register now.

Our community needs to make certain that the public is involved in the public business.  And that business includes electing our city's leaders.

The city elections that are during the summer traditionally have a low turnout.  Part of that is because people don't know when it is.

Anyone know when it is this year?

Funny you should ask....

I just received a reply from Mrs. Linda Crump, the City Clerk.  She is such a fabulous asset to this city!  She has always been responsive and accurate and complete when I've asked for information.....

City Election – August 26th
No primary.
If there is a runoff election it will be October 7, 2008.

You must be a resident of the City for 90 days prior to the election.

The Mayor will give the official Notice of Election on Tuesday, July 1st.  At that time candidates must come and sign up and declare which office or place they are running for.  There is also a $50.00 qualification fee that must be paid.  The last day to qualify if you want to run for the City Council or Mayor is July 15th.

Anyone running for office must be aware of and comply with the Fair Campaign Practice Act (FCPA) and they must also fill out the Ethics Forms (statement of economic interest).

Anyone who wants information on the FCPA and Ethics requirements can go on line with the election division of the Sec. of State.  They have forms that can be downloaded as well as explain the requirements of the act.

A person is a candidate when they fill out the forms officially with the City of Hoover.  They can also become a candidate by definition of the FCPA if they collect or spend $1,000.  Once that amount is reached they are considered a candidate and must comply with these laws.

A person does not have to provide any documentation to qualify as a candidate.  They are signing the qualifying form and will be given the paperwork for the FCPA and Ethics which must be filed within the time allotted.

Cut off for qualifying to run is 5PM, July 15th in the City Clerk's office.
