Back in the day
08/02/07 at 12:18am

When I was a child, I distinctly remember that there were some children I was not allowed to play with.  There were other children I could play with, as long as they played in my yard; but I was not allowed to play in their yard.  I would imagine that most of us had similar situations.

As an adult - and as a parent - I now understand what this was all about.  There were just some kids that my parents did not want me to associate with because of the way they acted.  There were some other kids who had parents that my parents chose not to associate with (for their own reasons) but felt their children should not be blamed for the adult behavior.

As parents, we have the right to have some control over the adults that influence our children - even if that person is a teacher, coach or administrator in their school.  Our desires to protect our children can stem from many things - and don't always have to be based on factual information.  We all experience "feelings" that can contribute to our opinion of another person.  We have all encountered someone in our lifetime that we did not like on first meeting for no discernable reason other than a "gut feeling".  We often choose to avoid that person on our own.

Would it then be wrong to want our children to stay away from that person as well?

We have all held our children close as we had to walk through some not as desirable areas while shopping, at a parade or football game (say parking at Legion Field) because some of the people we see on our path are what we would call unsavory characters.

It is my opinion that many of the posters here are simply concerned for their children's welfare - actually a noble pursuit.  I feel it is very unfair and unkind for other posters to attack and criticize them for simply saying they feel a need to protect their child from someone they feel could be an inappropriate influence.

I agree with your sentiments wholeheartedly and echo much of what you've said, often.  I did so in a post last night.

You make some of the same valid points, too, in how your parents handled their concerns.  They protected you and allowed to associate with the children that were not at fault.  They didn't do anything to hurt the other children.  They also didn't spread rumors and discuss the Jones' with their children, call them names in public, spread rumors and point their finger in their face for the public to witness, did they? According to your post, “No”.  I would be more then willing to bet that they acted very civil about the situation while protecting you and teaching you the values they wished to instill within you and to serve you while you grew through those childhood years and became an adult.

Wouldn't it be nice if that were the case today and how our parents in the community behaved in 2007?  Sadly, it appears that many of the parents in our community have forgotten what they were taught, or perhaps were never taught like you portray.

Cry me a river.  A monster like RP would never have been created in a community the size of Hoover back in the day.  Back in the day, members of the community had perspective on what contribution football made to a community.

It'll all come out in court.  Please don't settle with Bishop, BOE.  Let it play out so we can finally rid our city of the demon named Rush Propst!

Back in the day where I come from, there would have been a "come to Jesus meeting" by the men in our town and this would have been handled.  There would have been no secret meetings and the person would have moved away and started their same problems all over again somewhere else, but not in our town.

Lament, I don't think that he saying that it should be done.  He's just saying that back in the day, it's what would have happened.

And it is...not just in the South either.  Even further back in the day, after the meeting, there would be copious amounts of tar and feathers involved in the send off.

These things don't happen today...haven't we made great strides forward?

Hey, you are only 15 going on 16.  The 60's were a whole different world.  I did not say it was right, I just said that is how it was in a small town.

That might have come off as sarcastic, but it's not meant to be.
