Maybe Bishop can get...
07/26/07 at 11:28am

....a job with the new class ring company that he and Rush strong armed HHS in to signing with. That way he can hang out at HHS with his buddy Rush and do nothing....just like he spent all of last year!

good thought, but an even better one would be to get the company that had served HHS for so many years back into the school...I have been told by a source that is in the know, that Rush's friend's company charged prices that would generate $25,000 more than the previous one.  I am not making an accusation, but I do wonder where that money went.

I have also been told that the company that was kicked out of HHS had always helped with scholarships, donated rings, and helped fund many projects for the school over the years, but I guess they didn't grease palms or have the right "connections."  It still amazes me that a football coach can have such an influence on a school.  Shouldn't the principal have ultimate authority in a school?

I did not mean to get off on a tangent, hopefully this will not drastically affect RB and his family.  Now he has experienced what the people he fired experienced, it is just sad that it had to be drawn out in public the way it was.

Perhaps you could PM me the name of the old company and the name of the new company.  Or you could just post them here, it doesn't matter.  Whichever route you chose, rest assured that some investigative reporting will be done and the results will be reported back here.

I will save you some time. The previous company was Campus Recognition/Jostens.  The family that owns it live in Hoover and their kids went to HHS. Very well liked and HHS had a scholarship named in memory of the father that suddenly passed away in 2000. I know several kids that received other scholarships from the family through HHS.

New company is Balfour.  The owner is on the Park and Recs Board and has close ties to certain members of the booster club and went to school with Propst (that seems to be a common theme.)

I also understand as stated above that it was an unwelcomed change and that prices related to the change have gone up considerably.  This subject was also on the al forum, but like most it was deleted.

Well, as you may be aware, not too many topics are deleted from this forum.  A couple of calls to the right people and it might see the light of day.  If the Birmingham News refuses to cover it, then it would be fair to say that they have some strange bedfellows.

Now, Jostens is in Minnesota, according to their web site and Balfour is based in Austin, TX according to their site.  Who makes the decision on what company to choose for class rings?

I think companies like these have reps or either independent companies that represent them.  I would assume that principals make these decisions or maybe in this case football coaches.  I would say to call the school or better yet call the company that no longer works in the school.  I'm sure they could give you what you need.

It sounds like everything related to money or contracts with companies needs to be scrutinized at HHS, which is very disturbing.   I am ashamed that we have gotten to this point.  I hope that incidents like this are school level and not BOE or CC related.  It seems that if the Parks and Recs president is a rep for Balfour that working for the school would be a conflict of interest and obviously his connections are higher than just Propst.

Who knows what else will be exposed as this thing continues on.  It sounds like you are someone that is a "hunter" and can get info so keep us posted.

FYI: Balfour (the new company) was well ensconced as Spain Park's ring and graduation gear provider long before they were allowed into HHS.  Furthermore, don't blame Bishop for this:  Sandra Spivey made the decision before she moved up to the Central Office.  This is just one more way that Dr. Spivey compromised in order to get the heck out of HHS and into the Central Office.

If Spivey "compromised" by agreeing to use RP's buddy to offer class rings to students, can you really blame her?  Compared to what others have done and are desperately trying to hide, Spivey's actions appear to be nothing more than an effort to "save her soul" until she could find a way to get the "hell out of Dodge".  Smart lady.  Now that's she's safely away from Hoover, hopefully she'll reveal more about what she knows.

I'm not so sure she will be bothered by this. She already said that she doesn't recall saying that RP was 'untouchable".

I was unimpressed by Spivey at first meeting.  She came across as trying to say she was so much better than anyone else.  Of course, I was sweating from 8 hours in a concession stand and she was cool as a cucumber having been in the pressbox for the game.  She came in to ask for free food and drinks for herself and family.  That was not cute to me at all.

Of course I had already heard from some people in Alex CIty how pleased they were to send her Hoover's way.  She was the AP to Carol Martin at Alex City when Carol was principal there.

Radar, Spivey did a whole lot more than just sell out HHS to Balfour.  I was impressed with her at first, but over time it became clear that she had poor judgment in choosing friends and advisors.  She allowed herself to be taken in by the manipulative Peer Helping teacher (buddies with BV on the BOE), who became her best friend in the school and closest confident.  Yes, SS was a teacher under CM in Alex City, but TB is the cancer that really ate away at SS's judgment and integrity.

I agree that she had good reason to want to get away from HHS, but she chose to ally herself with the rats as she abandoned her rotting ship.

So if I understand this, she made a deal with RP or his balfour parks and rec buddy to get her to the board and get a nice salary in exchange for committing the school to Balfour. Now that sounds like a quality person, let us pay more money to Rush's buddy so she can get out of HHS and get a job at the BOE.  Talking about selling one's soul.

Lawmom may be able to answer this, can a person in her position obligate the school to a company even if she is not going to be at the school?  I guess it would depend on when the official change over was made.  I wonder if she waited until her job was finalized with the BOE.

Either way this is just one more example of the garbage in our system that needs to be corrected.  Where did all of the honest people go?  What will it take to stabilize and rebuild HHS?  You have to admire the teachers there who continue to do their jobs in the face of such adversity.

As far as contract law goes, I don't think it really matters where she 'might' have been going. If she had the authority to sign the contract and she did, then the contract is valid even if she later quits the position.

We all have to remember Spivey is no longer a Hoover employee. She left the school system before the school year was out. I wonder if she may have had a 2 year contract and this was just a way that she would appear to be working for the system while she looked for another job. It would have caused less publicity than if they had let her out of her contract and paid her for it like Connie Williams.

We sure do waste a lot of money getting rid of people who won't do RP's bidding.

Right on, Lawmom.  She signed as "principal"  the position rather than a specific person and had the authority to do that at the time.

I doubt she had a two year contract because she would have come under the Teacher Accountability Act - meaning she was a contract principal with an initial one year probationary contract more than likely.   In some systems, that initial contract is three years.  If that is the case, it can still be broken by mutual consent of the parties.

I agree with you. Spivey was not smart to buddy up with TB. TB seems to get paid alot for doing nothing but she is not the only one. There are others and they seem to all have a connection to football.

FYI this behind the scenes change for class rings also included all of the graduation supplies that each senior purchases including gowns, announcements, diplomas, etc.  The $110,000 salary Spivey received as HR director was probably worth screwing the parents and students of HHS.  In addition the decision was made when she had one foot out the door.

While some hold Bishop responsible for everything wrong with Hoover, he did not participate in this particular fiasco.
