Recap of Board Meeting/Work Session
07/19/07 at 11:18pm

The HSCIN will post a complete recap of the Board meeting and Work Session as soon as possible.

Regarding the Hoover High Investigation:

Judge Pointer attended the meeting tonight at Donna Frazier's request to give an update on the investigation into allegations that grades were changed and athletes were given special treatment at Hoover High School.

Judge Pointer outlined 4 areas of concern:

(1)  Grade changes by administrators;
(2)  Possible pressure on teachers to change grades, and the reassignment of athletes from tenured to non-tenured teachers' classrooms;
(3)  Possible inappropriate support and preferential treatment of athletes, specifically football players;
(4)  Problems in the area of control and management of the Hoover High School football program.

Pointer also addressed the possible problems with finances and stated that his firm might possibly suggest policy changes and changes in internal auditing procedures.

Originally, Pointer told Mr. Craig that this investigation could cost $50,000 to $80,000.  Pointer updated that figure to a bit more than $80,000 by the time the investigation is complete.

In June, 62.75 hours were billed.  For the month of July, up to today, 110 hours have been committed to this investigation.

An average of $265/hour was billed for June.

The investigation will not be completed before mid-August.  Pointer also stated that information will not be able to be given in time to give direction for personnel decisions that need to be made.

More than 20 interviews have been conducted between June 26 and July 18.  Those interviewed have been cooperative.

Coach Rush Propst has not yet been interviewed, but has indicated his willingness to be interviewed.

Pointer stated that the Hoover City Schools personnel have been very helpful, including the "computer people", the Superintendent, and Internal Auditor Wendy Brandon.

He asked if the Board had any questions of him.  There were none.

Forgive me if I've missed some details.  The complete writeup will be available as soon as possible at www.hscin.org.
