Next Board Meeting
07/13/07 at 4:07pm

The next School Board Meeting is July 23 at 5:30 PM.  Does anyone volunteer to request to be on the Agenda and present any concerns, suggestions, etc?  I know the HHS allegations are being investigated and we may or may not be notified of the results.  However, I believe we should formally let the Board know what we as a community expect from the investigation (I'm not referring to anything having to do with minors, etc. - just operations, etc.).  If someone who is a good public speaker (as you can tell I am not), I would volunteer to gather requests from the community and serve as the speaker's secretary and type his/her notes and take responsibility for getting our speaker on the Agenda.  But hurry if you would like to volunteer as we would need to submit our request to be on the Agenda by Monday.

The board requires that you get on the agenda at least 5 days prior to a board meeting.  They have been known in the past to allow members of the audience to have a say, but if they have a lot on the agenda, I wouldn't count on it.

All you have to do to be heard is raise your hand when the right person is talking--such as Craig or Frazier--and they will "call" on you.  Then stand up and start talking fast. Don't ask for permission to talk.  Just do it.  I have seen them recognize people they like such as Broadway in this manner on more than one occasion.  And, I went to watch Veitch's "interview" by the CC before he was re-appointed.  He said that he had NEVER  denied anyone  from the public the opportunity to speak from the floor.  And if they deny someone on July 23, then that's more negative media for them.  After all, this BOE is not known as being rules' followers.  They don't even follow the law.  They violate the Open Meetings and Sunshine Laws on a regular basis.  The 5 day advance notice "rule" is simply an intimidation tactic that has worked for far too long.  Even the CC treats the public better at its meetings.  Generally, before a vote is taken,  Ivey will ask if anyone else in the room wants to be heard on the subject at hand.

Just as an FYI - ANYONE can request that a public board notify them in advance of meetings under the Open Meetings Law.  All you have to do is be added to their email or fax list and you should be notified at least 48 hours in advance.
