Title: Board has Called a Meeting
Post by HSCIN on 07/18/07 at 1:31pm

The Board has called a meeting for 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 19.  The items on the Agenda include Personnel Actions and a Purchase Offer for the Shades Mountain Elementary site.

The Regular Work Session will follow at 5:30 p.m.

The Regular Meeting will be held as planned on Monday, July 23, at 5:30 p.m.

The Agendas/Draft Agendas for both meetings are posted at www.hscin.org and should be posted on the Hoover City Schools official website at www.hoover.k12.al.us

I think this purchase offer has to do with the land behind the school where the city wants to build a community center.

I just contacted the School Board and asked when the next meeting was and where it was being held and where on the web site it would be listed.  The person who answered the phone indicated that it would be listed on the main page, which as of 2:32 pm it is not.

We're moving this to Important Topics and ask that all those that can, make every effort to attend the meeting at the BOE building:

Hoover City Schools
Board of Education
2810 Metropolitan Way
Hoover, Alabama 35243

If someone can provide a link on the Hoover School web site announcing the meeting, please do so.  At this time it appears that perhaps they don't want to announce it too loudly.

It is rather odd that the board is having a specially called meeting tomorrow at 5:00 PM.  Even though the meeting has apparently not been publicly announced, as required by the Open Meetings Law, if the items on the agenda are the 2 items described above in the prior postings, they sound like items that could be addressed during the work session and voted on at the regularly scheduled meeting on July 23, two business days later.  What's the rush (no pun intended) requiring a special meeting tomorrow? BOE is definitely trying to "slip" something by the public again.  Spread the word.  We cannot stop what they do tomorrow, but we can stare at them while they do it...and ask questions.  Make sure the media knows.  They don't generally attend work sessions as much as meetings. BOE is counting on low attendance.

This board meeting was specifically changed in order to avoid the parents who had planned to attend, and this forum and HSCIN had a lot to do with the spread of information. The board at this moment is afraid to either face the parents or is up to its little devious ways like the days prior to the firing of Connie Williams.

Walktall,
You are exactly right about the BOE's motivation. They slipped Pointer on the agenda for tonight (without any notice whatsoever) and assumed that most people would not show up tonight, but Monday when it would be more logical for Pointer to make a report.  What a shock for the board.  It wasn't standing room only, but there were very few empty seats.  BOE asked no questions of Pointer and didn't even raise their eyebrows when he said it would probably end up costing in excess of $80,000 before he and his staff finish interviews and review of documents.  He confirmed clearly that the BOE is his client and that he is operating under an attorney- client privilege.  Close to $50,000 has been incurred through the end of July and Propst has not even been interviewed yet.
Let's start asking for financials people.  We, as the public, have the right to ask and see every single document, email, memo, letter,note,etc.., dealing with these financial issues.  It will be up to us to put the state agencies and SACS on notice of financial wrongdoings.  Pointer cannot turn in his client for that.  It will be up to us to seek an accounting of  how our tax dollars and donor money has been spent.

I can't follow your logic. Do you want the investigation to proceed so that there is a chance the real facts will be uncovered? Or do you want to stop the investigation to save the money and probably never uncover anything more? It seems like the BOE is "darned if you do and darned if you don't" regardless of what they do. I can't imagine the endless bitching if there wasn't an investigation underway.

To clarify, I would love to see a real investigation by an independent agency such as the state board of examiners. Our tax dollars pay for that agency, too, and it would cost us nothing extra to bring them into the picture. But Pointer and his associates are lawyers,  just like the board lawyer on retainer, Donald Sweeney, who represent the BOE subject to the attorney client privilege.  Pointer stated tonight that he represents the BOE, and when he asked the BOE if they had any questions, he told them that he would warn them if a question from them would require him to discuss "attorney client" issues in front of the public. The BOE didn't ask him a single question and they won't until they get him behind closed doors.

I want an investigation and I want to know the results. Do I want our citizens to pay $80,000 plus and be given "limited" information only? Not at all.  And I don't understand why no effort was made to review documents by the superintendent, Chief Academic Officer or CFO before hiring additional lawyers.  Documents tend to speak for themselves.  These documents were created by our administration.  They should be able to understand them and make decisions based upon  them if wrongdoings and/or errors are discovered.  It's not rocket science and it doesn't require 4 lawyers.  Only reason for lawyers is to defend your actions.

The report will have to be given to the public.  It's subject to the Public Records Law.

Seems to me that a request to the state board of education for a financial audit might be in order.
